The Cherokee Nation has a rich and storied history that spans thousands of years. Our ancestors were skilled hunters, gatherers, and farmers who lived in harmony with nature. We had our own system of government, laws, and social structures that allowed us to thrive as a society.
Our traditional territory stretched from the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee to the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas, and we were known for our expertise in agriculture, hunting, and warfare.
Unfortunately, our peaceful existence was disrupted by the arrival of European colonizers. The forced relocation of our people from their ancestral lands to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) had devastating effects on our society.
Many of our people died during this brutal process, known as the Trail of Tears, due to exposure, disease, and starvation. This traumatic event has left a lasting impact on our community.
Despite these challenges, we have continued to thrive as a nation. We have worked tirelessly to preserve our language, culture, and traditions for future generations.
Today, the Cherokee Nation is a thriving community with its own government, schools, healthcare services, and economic development initiatives. We are proud of our accomplishments and remain committed to preserving our heritage.
